چکیده

Processing dependencies in speech have traditionally been studied using a speeded classification paradigm. In this procedure, listeners have to monitor one dimension of speech (e.g. segmental detail) while another dimension (e.g. suprasegmental detail) varies. Variation in the unattended dimension has been shown to interfere with responses to the attended dimension. In the present study, the speeded classification task was adapted to investigate interference from two distinct kinds of suprasegmental information – emotion and lexical tone – in tonal and non-tonal speakers. Results demonstrate a distinct pattern of responses for each group, suggesting influences of native language properties on processing

The influence of native-language tones on lexical access in the second language.

When listening to speech in a second language, bilinguals' perception of acoustic-phonetic properties is often influenced by the features that are important in the native language of the bilingual. Furthermore, changes in the perception of segmental contrasts due to L1 experience can influence L2 lexical access during comprehension. The present study investigates whether the effect of L1 experi...

The Effect of Lexical Frequency on Tone Production

Previous research has identified robust effects on segmental production of lexical factors like word frequency, predictability or neighborhood density. One question that remains unanswered is whether such lexical effects hold also at the suprasegmental level. This study investigates whether lexical factors such as usage frequency affect tone production in Cantonese. We recorded Cantonese monosy...

Dissociation in the neural basis underlying Chinese tone and vowel production.

Neuropsychologists have debated over whether the processing of segmental and suprasegmental units involves different neural mechanisms. Focusing on the production of Chinese lexical tones (suprasegmental units) and vowels (segmental units), this study used the adaptation paradigm to investigate a possible neural dissociation for tone and vowel production. Ten native Chinese speakers were asked ...

Priming Effects of Tones and Segments in Lexical Processing in Mandarin

In tone languages, pitch variation is one of the primary cues to distinguish lexical meanings. Similar to consonants and vowels, lexical tones play a role in accessing to lexical information, but these segmental and suprasegmental features may have different roles in this process. In this study, we examine the priming effects of tones, consonants, and vowels in an auditory task of lexical decis...
